Japanese Prints—Limited Time—Art Institute
View prints by Hokusai, Utamaro, Sharaku, and other ukiyo-e artists. You’ll have the opportunity to compare multiple editions of the same design and see if you can identify the differences between them. You’ll also see the impact of light exposure on artwork. For instance, The Great Wave was originally printed with a bright pink sky, yet surviving prints tend to feature a pale beige sky. All three of the Art Institute’s Great Wave prints—one of which retains its pink color—are presented together in this exhibition.
Exhibition Open: April 6–June 22, 2019
